'Syngas' is the common name for a gas containing hydrogen and carbon monoxide. For diesel engines, syngas is a superior reducing agent for lean NOx traps and fuel for efficient heating of diesel particulate filters because it is more chemically active and combusts at a lower temperature.

Syngas production technology is mature with decades of use by refineries in large, steady-state systems. In these systems, partial oxidation reactions convert hydrocarbons and an oxidant into hydrogen and carbon monoxide.
